One day in Giza

With only one day in Giza, you will want to make the most of the day! Of course, you will need to see the UNESCO Giza Pyramids, which are one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, but there are so many other highlights in Giza that are a “must-see!”

Saqqara – Step Pyramids / Pyramid of Djoser

The magnificent Step Pyramid was built by Djoser, the king of the Third Dynasty around 2700 BC. The Step Pyramid isn’t as famous as the Great Pyramids, but it is the first pyramid in history. The steps are believed to be a giant stairway to connect the king, King Djoser, to Ra, the Sun God after being resurrected.

You will enter the pyramid of Teti to see the only pyramids and tombs with Egyptian inscriptions inside available for the public to see. Look for the “cartouche”, which is the name of the Egyptian Royalty with an oval around it.

At Saqqara, you will also be able to look inside the High Priest Tomb, where you will see amazing Egyptian carraictures of stories of the afterlife, with such intricate animals and people. This was truly one of the highlights for me. Unfortunately, photos inside are not allowed but you have to trust me when I say it was amazing!

Giza Great Pyramids

The UNESCO Great Pyramids are comprised of three pyramids that were the acropolis for everyone. The first one was the largest in size, and only the large one is one of the seven wonders of the world. The pyramids were where the kings were buried with their treasures for the afterlife. Three million blocks were used to build the great pyramid!

You have the option to purchase tickets to go inside one or all of the pyramids when you arrive. We entered into the Great Pyramid and it felt like the movie of tomb raider going into the narrow pathways. You will need to bend over into a tight walkway to get inside about 3-4 ft high. If you are claustrophobic or not okay bending low, I might not recommend it, but the experience is worth it if you go. Don’t say I didn’t warn you if you go!

Great Sphinx

The Great Sphinx is located not too far away from the Great Pyramids. Because lions are the kings of the forest, each lion represents Ra. With the head of a human and a body of a lion, the Sphinx represents that the king is a living image of Ra. Have fun creating some creative poses with the Sphinx!

Memphis – The Ancient Capital of Egypt

Memphis is the old capital of Egypt from 3300 BC, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There you will find an outdoor museum of statues found throughout Egypt. The famous King Ramesses the Great, who is 10m tall. Other notable statues like the Sphinx of Memphis (a smaller version of the Great Sphinx), the Triad of Memphis, Ramessess II Statue, and the Sarcophagus of Isis are found in this ancient city of wonders.
