Situated just 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Guatemala City, the capital, Antigua was once the capital of the country. Following a series of devastating earthquakes in 1773, much of Antigua was destroyed, leading to the capital’s relocation to what is now Guatemala City. Initially, I assumed the name “Antigua” was to differentiate it from the Caribbean island of Antigua. However, the history is much more intriguing.

Today, the city is often referred to simply as Antigua, Antigua Guatemala, La Antigua, or La Antigua Guatemala. While it no longer holds the title of capital, Antigua remains one of the most visually stunning cities in Guatemala and arguably a more popular tourist destination than Guatemala City. The city is not only renowned for its captivating colonial architecture but is also much safer compared to the bustling capital.

The historic center of Antigua has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its exceptional example of Spanish colonial urban design and architecture.

1 Explore the City on Foot or Join a Walking Tour

Antigua is a very walkable city, making it easy to explore on foot. During my nearly two-week stay, I only took one Uber (out of the city). To get the most out of your visit, consider booking a free city tour to learn about the town’s rich history and uncover hidden gems, including a century-old sweet shop. 

I highly recommend GuruWalk for this it’s free (though tipping $10-15 is customary), and the 2-hour tour offers fascinating insights into Antigua and Guatemala’s past.

If tours aren’t your thing, spend a morning wandering the cobblestone streets and admiring the stunning architecture. Don’t miss iconic sites like the Santa Catalina Arch (the city’s most photographed spot), the main plaza, the Santa Clara Convent, and the historic La Union Tank, a public laundry facility.

2 Hike Acatenango Volcano

For adventure seekers, hiking the Acatenango Volcano is a must. The 2-day trek offers the opportunity to watch the active Fuego Volcano erupt from a safe vantage point on Acatenango. This trek was one of the main reasons I traveled to Guatemala, and it certainly didn’t disappoint! 

3 Bike Tour Through Surrounding Villages

If you have extra time, explore the villages around Antigua on a bike tour. While ATV tours are popular, biking offers a more intimate way to experience the area. This 5-hour tour takes you through a family-run chocolate factory, a jade workshop, and a macadamia farm, plus a hands-on experience making tortillas at a local market. 

4 Visit the Local Markets

Antigua’s central market is a maze of stalls and an excellent place to get a taste of local life. Spend an hour wandering through the market, where you’ll find fresh produce, souvenirs, and inexpensive meals. 

The Artisan Market, located on the left side of Mercado Central, features local artists and is perfect for finding high-quality souvenirs. On the opposite side, you’ll find a second-hand market that offers affordable clothing and unique thrift finds.

5 Explore Churches and Ruins

Antigua’s turbulent history, marked by frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, has left behind numerous ruins, many of which are old churches. Some are still being repaired, while others remain in their dilapidated state, offering a glimpse into the past. 

Dedicate a morning or afternoon to exploring these historic sites (entrance fees apply). Don’t forget to visit the picturesque local cemetery, known for its beautiful white mausoleums, located near the main bus terminal.

Antigua is relatively affordable, especially if you enjoy street food or stay at budget hostels. However, it is one of the more expensive places to visit in Guatemala. The currency is the quetzal (Q), with an exchange rate of about USD 1 = 7.8 Q.
