2. Explore Kruje Castle

Kruje Castle sits high on a hill and offers stunning views of the valley, the town below, and the surrounding mountains. Dating back to the 5th century, it’s a must-see for history lovers. On clear days, you can even spot Tirana, the capital city, from the castle. It’s a great spot for photos or enjoying a meal at one of the nearby restaurants.

3. Visit the Skanderbeg Museum

Skanderbeg Museum honors Gjergj Kastrioti, also known as Skanderbeg, one of Albania’s greatest heroes. Located within Kruje Castle, the museum has exhibits that showcase his military achievements and his fight against the Ottoman Empire. 

You’ll find a collection of artifacts, weapons, armor, and historical documents, all helping to tell the story of his life and his role in shaping Albania’s history. The museum was founded in 1982 and offers a deep dive into Albania’s past. The entry fee for the museum is 500 Lek, but it’s free for locals.

4. Learn at the Ethnographic Museum

The Ethnographic Museum offers a fascinating look at traditional Albanian life. Located in a restored Ottoman-style house, it’s filled with artifacts that show the customs and daily life of people from the 18th and 19th centuries. 

You’ll see traditional clothing, jewelry, and intricately woven rugs, along with beautifully crafted woodwork and embroidery. It’s a great place to learn about the craftsmanship and creativity of Albania’s past. The entrance fee is 400 Lek.

5. Visit the Santuario de Hajji Mustafa Baba

Located near the Kruje Castle, the Santuario de Hajji Mustafa Baba is a shrine worth checking out, especially for history buffs. It’s a peaceful spot within the castle ruins and adds to the historical feel of the area.

Best Things to Do in Kruje (That Aren’t as Accessible)

If you have more time and want to explore beyond the town, there are a few spots worth visiting, but keep in mind that they’re less accessible and require either a car or a driver.

6. Hike to Teqeja e Sari Salltikut / Mount Sarisalltik

This hike takes you up Mount Sarisalltik, an important religious site for the Bektashi Order, a mystical Islamic sect. Even if you’re not interested in the religious aspects, the hike offers fantastic views. It starts in Kruje, though it’s a challenging climb. You can also drive part of the way, but some of the roads may not be accessible to regular cars.

7. Shtamë Pass Nature Park / Parku Kombëtar Qafë Shtamë

Located about 45 minutes east of Kruje, Shtamë Pass Nature Park is perfect for nature lovers. You can hike among pine trees and enjoy the fresh air. It’s also a popular water source for a local bottled water company.

8. Zezë Canyon / Kanionin e Zezë

How to Get to Kruje from Tirana

If you’re coming from Tirana, you can take the Kamez bus from the city center to the Tirana bus station for just 40 Lek. From there, buy a ticket to Kruje for 150 Lek (though prices might be higher now). Alternatively, you can take a taxi from Tirana for 25-30 euros or from the airport for about 22 euros. Day trips to Kruje are also available if you prefer a guided tour.

Albania enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The best time to visit Kruje is from May to October when the weather is sunny and ideal for sightseeing. July and August are the hottest months, with temperatures reaching up to 34°C. 

Summer is also the peak tourist season, meaning higher hotel prices and more crowded attractions. If you prefer fewer crowds, visiting during the off-season might be a better option. The average annual temperature in Kruje is around 20°C.
